A group of documents, dating from 1957 to 1967, related to the SCLC and its extensive work during the Civil Rights Movement. Archive includes the following:

"Dr. King Leaves Montgomery For Atlanta" Press Release. 2pp typed, 8.5" x 11", December 1, 1959. A press release announcing Martin Luther King, Jr.'s move to Atlanta, Georgia in order to be closer to the SCLC headquarters. It reads in part: "For the past year, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference has been pleading with Dr. King to give it the maximum of his invaluable leadership. Dr. King emphasized his change of residence was a painful decision, but came in response to the appeal of the SCLC that the time was right for expanded militant action across the south, and for which his presence closer to headquarters was indispensable."

1957 Civil Rights Bill News Release. 3pp, 8.5" x 14", August 8, 1957. A news release from the SCLC regarding various topics voted on at a recent session. Positions voted on include the recently passed Civil Rights Bill, "unchristian and undemocratic" actions of Alabama State Attorney General John Patterson, and the leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr.

SCLC Treasurer's Report. 2pp, 8.5" x 11", August 31, 1961. Reporting for the fiscal year from September 1, 1960 to August 31, 1961.

"Institute on Nonviolenec to Segregation" Conference Reports. A list of attendees and a report from discussions had at the event held at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.. The list is 2pp, 8.5" x 11", July 22-24, 1959. A typed list of the names and addresses of persons attending, including Reverend and Mrs. Abernathy, Reverend and Mrs. King, Reverend Gardner, and Reverend Wyatt Tee Walker. Dr. King's secretary, Maude Ballou, has had her name and address written in by hand in blue ink. The report is from Discussion Group C, led by Ralph Abernathy and Richard B. Gregg. Topics discussed were nonviolent protests and philosophies.

Barbara Jordan "Civil Rights and Politics" Address. 4pp. 8.5" x 11" August 15, 1967. Jordan was a state senator from Texas and Civil Rights leader. Her speech reflects the distrust that blacks had for the political system and what steps need to be made in order to make meaningful change.

"The SCLC Story in Words and Pictures" Soft-wrap Publication. 64pp, 8.5" x 10.75". Published by The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Atlanta, Georgia. Dated 1964. Includes a transcription of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, along with contributions such as "The History of SCLC" by L.D. Reddick, "The Meaning of Birmingham" by Wyatt Tee Walker, and "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" written by King from jail on April 12, 1963. Also includes numerous black and white photographs of the year's events and of key SCLC figures.

Blank "Statement of Southern Negro Leaders" Petition. 1pp, 8.5" x 14", circa June 1959. The petition argues against recent legislation being considered that would revive state sedition laws. It reads in part: "The passage of these new laws would impair our rights, already limited, and would remove from us the protection promised by the Supreme Court. We ask our colleagues with the church, and we ask the press, civic groups, labor unions and farm groups to recognize these bills for what they are and to work with us for their defeat."

Light uneven toning to some documents. The portrait of Charles Kenzie Steele has been clipped from the front Officers section of the printed publication. The petition has a large tear at the right side, along with some small areas of creasing and chipping, but is still legible.
