[Rev War] Dr. Alexander Campbell Signed Ledger for Patient Costs
A signed accounting ledger signed by Dr. Alexander Campbell for payments received for "doctoring Jane Wilson." 1p, measuring 6" x 15", Oxford, Massachusetts, dated December 20, 1770 - March 3, 1771. Signed "Alex: Campbell" and addressed to the Selectmen of Oxford. The account records numerous patient visits and costs, totaling £3"0"7 overall. Later signed by Edward Davis as Justice of the Peace, dated May 17, 1771. Docketed on verso. The account sheet has been matted to the overall size of 9" x 18.25". With flattened folds, light soiling, and minor foxing. Boldly signed. Very good overall.
Dr. Alexander Campbell (1732-1782) was for many years the leading physician in Oxford, Massachusetts and had numerous pupils studying under him. In 1774, he was elected a member of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, and two years later, he was elected Chairman of the Oxford Town Committee for forming the Massachusetts State Constitution.
Edward Davis (1713/14-1784) was for many years a very influential citizen of Oxford. He served as a captain of militia during the French and Indian War and from 1763-1771 a major of the first Worcester County Regiment. From 1740 to 1780 he was involved in local legislation, becoming a selectman and moderator in town meetings. Later, from 1760 onward, he served as Justice of the Peace.
