Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Presentation watch engraved to Major Jeremiah A. Sullivan, 13th NY Infantry & 1st NY Veteran Cavalry, KIA at Cabletown, WV, with CDV in uniform. 2 1/8 in. diam. Henry Beguelin pocket watch with silver double hunter case (small circular crack to dial, spots of oxidation and tarnish throughout case; not running). Obverse and reverse with floral motifs. Rear cover interior engraved, "Lieut. J. A. Sullivan / from his / Friends / Rochester, N.Y. / Dec. 21st 1861." With glass display cloche. CDV portrait of Sullivan standing in uniform, posed with one hand resting on his hip. Rochester, NY: Powelson, n.d. (few light surface imperfections, soiling and wear to mount edges and corners). Verso with Powelson's imprint and penciled identification. Jeremiah A. Sullivan enlisted on 25 April 1861 as a second lieutenant, and was commissioned into Company I, 13th New York Infantry Regiment, the following month. He completed 2 years' service with that regiment, during which he was promoted to a first lieutenant, then a captain, and transferred into Company B of the regiment. The 13th saw service at Bull Run, Yorktown, Gaines Mill, Savage's Station, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. After mustering out with that regiment in May of 1863, Sullivan was commissioned a major of the 1st New York Veteran Cavalry, in which capacity he was killed in action at Cabletown, WV.This lot is located in Cincinnati.
