[CIVIL WAR]. New Jersey Army of the Potomac presentation medal identified to John Burke, Company C, 21st New Jersey Volunteers. Overall approx. 3 1/2 x 1 3/8 in. silver medal suspended from tricolor ribbon; pin to reverse (ribbon with some fading/soiling/wear throughout, and fraying to bottom edge; medal with nicks and surface scratches throughout). Obverse features the New Jersey state coat of arms encircled by a border with 32 stars. Reverse with struck inscription "Presented to" and "By the Citizens of Bergen, Bayonne and Greenville," with "John Burke" engraved in the blank space reserved for the recipient's name. Legend reads, "Co. C 21st Regt. N.J.S. Vol. / Army f the Potomac, 1862-3." John Burke enlisted as a private on 28 August 1862 and mustered into Company C, 21st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on 15 September. The 21st left for Washington, DC the following day, then moved to Frederick, MD a couple of days later, joining the Army of the Potomac on the Antietam Battlefield. They attached to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, VI Corps until mustering out in June of 1863. As such, the regiment engaged at Fredericksburg, Maryes Heights, Salem Church.
