Painted Tin Civil War/GAR Canteen. One side painted with a United States flag against a blue background with grass below and inscribed in white paint 'SERGT M.V. BRIGGS/Co. K 89 REGT OVS/3 BRIGADE 3 DIVISION 14 CORP/ARMY WSA/AUG 1862 TO JUNE 1865' and the other side with remnants of painted flowers. Dia. 8 in. Footnotes: Note Sergeant Martin V. Briggs served in the 89th Regiment Ohio Volunteers, Company K, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 14th Corps, from August 1862 to June 1865. Brief unit history included with the lot. His obituary notice in the Chillicothe Gazette, Monday, March 4, 1907, reads: 'LAID DOWN THE BURDEN And Passed To His Eternal Reward, Did Martin V. Briggs. Into the realm of the great beyond passed the soul of one the county's old and highly respected citizens when at the close of a righteous and well spent life, devoted to the threefold welfare of country, family and neighbor, Mr. Martin V. Briggs ended this mortal sojourn on Saturday evening at nine o'clock. When he answered the call of his maker, there passed from the community a man whose name was linked with all that was good, a man loved by those who knew him, and respected by every one. Mr. Briggs was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Briggs, and was born on the farm of his father near Frankfort, Ohio on October 20 1836. After completing his education he settled down to farming, assisting his father in the care of the farm. When the clouds of rebellion began to lower on the peaceful horizon, Mr. Briggs answered the call of his country and on August 21, 1862, he joined Company K of the famous 89th O. V I. At Camp Dennison, Ohio and served with that regiment, first as a corporal, then as a sergeant, until the end of the war, when he was mustered out at the capital of the nation on June 7th, 1865. It was during General Sherman's march to the sea that Mr. Briggs' robust health spoke for itself, for he was the only man in his company that was not, at any period in that fatiguing tramp, compelled to ride in an ambulance. After the war, Mr. Briggs returned to the farm near Frankfort, and was married on September 8, 1868, to Miss Mary Dunlap, and their happy union was blessed by six children, four of whom are now living. About seven years ago Mr. Briggs and his family removed to this city, first residing on North High street and later removing to the Quinn property on West Second street, which property Mr. Briggs later purchased, and where he died on Sunday evening from the effects of a paralytic stroke received some five weeks since. Mr. Briggs is survived by his wife and four children, two daughters, Mrs. John Stitt, of Clarksburg, and Miss Blanche Briggs, of this city, and two sons, Mr. Harry Briggs, of Battle Creek, Mich., and Mr. Major Briggs, residing near this city. The funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, from the residence, and will be in charge of the Knights Templar, Rev. Hindman Officiating. Interment at Grandview Cemetery.'
