Lincoln Promotes Key General in Civil War Who Served as Chief Engineer of the Armies in the Field! He Protected the Army During Battle! Superb Example
Military appointment, 15.5” x 19”, and framed to 17.5” x 21.5”, April 13, 1863, appointing "John G. Barnard" Lieutenant Colonel in the Corps of Engineers. Boldly signed by 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) with his full signature as "Abraham Lincoln" at the lower right. Countersigned by U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton in the center of the document. Laid on a single sheet of vellum, partly printed and partly handwritten, "The President of the United States of America" at the top. With a blue embossed Presidential seal at the upper left. Expected paper folds, slight toning, barely visible. Not examined outside of frame.
John Gross Barnard (1815-1882) was a career engineering officer in the U.S. Army, serving in the Mexican–American War, as the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy and as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, the Engineer Brigade carried the Army of the Potomac across rivers and streams from the Potomac to the James, laid siege to Confederate fortifications, and designed earthworks that protected the Army during prolonged engagements.
