Item Details
Description

A remarkable 2 volume set of books, likely arranged by early 20th century book collector James W. Bullock (1852-1928), whose primary book collection was dispersed by way of a single owner sale at Parke-Bernet Galleries in the 1930s.

The set is a 9th edition of Samuel Drake’s “The Book of the Indians, or, Biography and History of the Indians of North America”, originally published 1841, this edition 1845. Both volumes are finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, noted English bookbinders of the early 20th century. Each binding in leather boards with gilt tooling of quiver and arrows, bow and tomahawks to the cover and backs. Interior of boards with fine pressing and tooling, marked to front board “Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London” and containing in Volume 1 a circular locket with enclosed rose quartz arrowhead, and containing in Volume 2 another locket with six beads. We could not locate another example of this publication in Sangorski & Sutcliffe bindings, nor could we locate another bound example with objects embedded in the interior of a binding in this manner. It is possible Bullock ordered this binding in the first decade of the 20th century when he was at the height of his collecting.

In addition to the binding, the set is “Extra Illustrated” profusely throughout both volumes by Charles Eliot Goodspeed (Boston, 1867-1950), a noted bookseller in Boston. Bullock was a Massachusetts resident most of his life, and would have been acquainted with Goodspeed’s Book Shop, as the famed book dealer and author was also at his height in this period. The back board is gilt tooled “Extra Illustrated by Goodspeed, Boston”

There are a total of 193 “Extra Illustrated” pages, containing a litany of engravings, etchings, lithographs, albumen photographs, and other hand written ephemera related to Native American history and the American West. Among these are several 18th century printed material and very early examples of Native American printed imagery. Also, several rare albumen CDV’s from the 1860s (probably relatively accessible to Goodspeed at the time). There are several small folio McKenney & Hall hand colored lithographs with exceedingly strong color and in a finely preserved state. A clipped signature and inscription by Eleazer Williams (1788-1858) is also present.

Each volume is contained within a green dust box. The cover bindings are in fine condition, with the exception of some crimping to the lower and upper connection to the dover boards. If you would like additional images of the “Extra Illustrated” pages, please contact info@cazasikes.com.
