NARES BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1875-76 A collection of items relating to the Nares Expedition, comprising; DIXON (HENRY, photographer) 'Arctic Expedition 1875. Officers of the H.M.S. Alert [including Nares, Feilden, A.H. Markham] Photographed on Board the Vessel on the Morning of Departure. May 29th 1875', albumen print, on original captioned mount, image (205 x 255mm.), framed and glazed, mount 260 x 280mm., [Portsmouth], 1875 Painting of H.M.S. Discovery, or H.M.S. Alert in the Arctic ice, members of the Expedition in the foreground, by an unknown artist oil on wooden board, 150 x 175mm., [c.1875-6] 'Naturalist. H.M.S. Alert', 2 brass plaques, engraved with lettering, approximately 20 x 90mm., [c.1875-6] Wooden pipe, USED BY FEILDEN ON THE EXPEDITION, incised 'Capt. Feilden- Arctic Exped. 75' on the rim, and '82° 20' N.L.' [Farthest North reached] on the bowl, without mouthpiece, with later label 'This pipe was used by Colonel H.W. Wemyss when on the Arctic...', no maker or date Wooden pipe, TAKEN FROM A DEAD SOLDIER DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, AND USED AT THE ARCTIC, bone mouthpiece, metal rim to chamber, and metal saddle engraved 'H.W.F.-E.R.A. 1875' and 'Til Nordpolen', and '82° 47' N.L.' on the stem, with label in W.H. Feilden's hand 'I got this pipe off a dead soldier in one of the attacks on Charleston in 1864, and smoked it for 30 years. It is now cracked & put on the shelve', approximately 150mm. in length, [no maker or date] (6) Footnotes: A group of unusual items relating to W.H. Feilden's travels to the Arctic, including a scarce photograph of the Officers of the H.M.S. Alert taken aboard the ship on the day of departure from Portsmouth, an image of one of the Expedition ships aside the ice floes, and 2 pipes engraved with lettering to commemorate the trip. One of the pipes was collected by Feilden from a dead soldier at Charleston in 1864 whilst he was serving in the Confederate army. Provenance: Captain Henry Wemyss Feilden (1838-1921), naturalist on the British Arctic Expedition, 1875-1876; thence by descent.
