The frail nature of this first issue binding in green cloth led the publishers to issue a more hard-wearing red cloth version that same year, 'with the result that few copies survive in truly fine condition' (Taurus Collection). Phalempin was a French banker who worked extensively in Australia for the Comptoir National d'Escompte de Paris, before settling in London in the early 1900s as the director of Crédit Industriel et Commercial.
