Description

BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, TERRA NOVA, 1910-13 [BIBLE] The Indexed Testament, Indexed and Marked... on All Subjects Connected with the Theme of Salvation, GEORGE P. ABBOTT'S COPY FROM TERRA NOVA, inscribed 'Mr. G.P. Abbott on his leaving New Zealand Antarctic Expedition 'Terra Nova' Nov. 1910. With all good wishes A.R. Falconer (Seaman's Missionary, Dunedin). John 3. 16' on front free endpaper, printed in red and black, inscribed calling card tipped-in at rear, modern limp red morocco incorporating original red morocco upper cover blocked in gilt lettered 'The Indexed Testament. Antarctic Expedition 'Terra Nova' 1910', g.e., bookseller's label of G. Derbyshire, Dunedin inside upper cover, 16mo (118 x 90mm.), Collins' Clear-Type Press, undated [c.1902] Footnotes: BIBLE FROM THE TERRA NOVA BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION LED BY ROBERT FALCON SCOTT, BELONGING TO GEORGE P. ABBOTT, who served as petty officer on board the expedition ship, was a member of the shore party, and was chosen as a member of the Northern Party which was forced to winter for seven months in a snow cave on Inexpressible Island. Terra Nova arrived at Port Chalmers on 27 November, where it took on coal supplies, and awaited the arrival of Scott and other officers who arrived from Lyttleton by train, before departure for the south on Tuesday 29 November 1910. Alexander R. Falconer (1843-1915) headed the Seamen's Missionary, and evidently presented bibles to various of the crew, including Captain Oates (his copy sold Christie's, 27 September 1996, lot 169), who recorded that whilst at Lyttleton 'I had a job helping the ship's carpenter to refit the cross tress on the foremast. It was rather amusing as a parson came up belonging to the Missions to Seamen' (Oates quoted in S. Limb and P. Cordingly, Captain Oates, Soldier and Explorer, 1982, p.165). Abbott worked with the ship's carpenter Davies in Lyttleton, so was quite probably with Oates at the time of Falconer's visit. Provenance: George P. Abbott (1880-1923); Mrs Emily Abbott, George's wife, with her visiting card; Christie's, 21 September 2000, lot 91.
