He was an extremely versatile artist known for his prolific output. He was an innovator in a wide range of genres such as history painting, genre painting, landscape painting, portrait and still life. Teniers is particularly known for developing the peasant genre, the tavern scene, pictures of collections and scenes with alchemists and physicians.
Jacques-Philippe Le Bas, or Lebas (1707-1783) was a French engraver, head of the largest engraving workshop in Paris during the 18th century.
"Jacques-Philippe Le Bas is celebrated as being 'the complete embodiment of 18th-century engraving.' A master of the craft, working in the artistic zenith of Paris Le Bas would reproduce the works of many great French artists. His efforts to educate the next generation of engravers also contributed to this deserved legacy."
In 1733, Le Bas was hired by Charles Parrocel to provide the chapter heading illustrations for L'ecole de Cavalerie, by François Robichon de la Gueriniere.
In 1743 Le Bas was admitted to the Academie. Thanks to a recommendation from Jean-Baptiste Descamps, he also became a member of the Academie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Rouen in 1748. He became an official Advisor to the Academie Royale in 1771, which gave him the right to collect a pension. In 1782, King Louis XVI appointed him Court Engraver to the Cabinet des Medailles.
