Simon Lake (1866-1945) Inventor. Lake built the Argonaut, the first submarine to operate extensively in the open sea. 8 ½” x 11” autograph letter signed, “Affectionately Dad,” personal stationery, four-pages (front and back), January 19, 1942, to his son., Tom Lake. “…I want to congratulate you on the beautiful job you have made of your boat…I had some discussion with them for making plates for…submarine 5/16” & 3/16” in thickness & if we succeed in getting any ordersfor this type submarine I will probably arrange to have them make these plates…I know these waters well as that is where I conducted my first tests with the ‘Argonaut’ in 1897. ..I have shown your photos to some of my naval friends who have told me they would like to see the boat run….” Includes the original envelope which he has addressed and signed,
