Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $800**

Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi or Zuni, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A handsomely carved and hand-painted wooden "Mudhead" kachina doll wearing his traditional abstract helmet mask and a striped cloak, as well as a necklace of glass and stone beads (possibly some of turquoise), a fabric collar, and a bracelet of kernel beads. He holds a feathered staff in one hand and a gathering of sticks in the other. Mudhead, known as Koyemsi, is the kachina who at dances will entertain the audience, especially the children present, with games. Kachina figures are meant as gifts for children representing kachina dancers and the supernatural kachina beings they embody, and are part of the Pueblo tradition, which includes the Hopi and the Zuni tribes. Size: 5.2" W x 14.5" H (13.2 cm x 36.8 cm)
