Description
1849 BEAUTIFUL SET Works of Francois Rabelais Illustrated Gargantua Pantagruel
“Seeing how sorrow eats you, defeats you.
Id rather write about laughing than crying,
For laughter makes men human, and courageous.”
? François Rabelais, Gargantua and Pantagruel
François Rabelais was an early 16th-century French writer. He is often considered one of the earliest fantasy writers and, because of his monumental work Gargantua and Pantagruel, he helped establish the modern European literary style. According to Merriam-Webster, the world rabelaisian has been coined as something that is "marked by gross robust humor, extravagance of caricature, or bold naturalism." (MW, Rabelaisian).
This 1849 English edition was translated by Thomas Urquhart who included the famous “Gargantua and Pantagruel”. These tomes are truly some of the most beautiful leather tomes of the works of Rabelais.
