This is a finely beaded Prestige cap (misango mapende). Beads are a major component of royal regalia for the Yaka and Pende peoples. Bicorn hats with brightly beaded geometric patterns became a symbol of prestige for local chiefs.Pende chiefs wore beaded hats with vividly colored geometric designs. Originally found among the Lunda chiefdom, and adopted by the Pende peoples, this distinctive headgear is now a symbol of prestige and power for Yaka chiefs. The hat measures 18 x 9 x 4 inches.
