Native American, Eastern to Midwestern United States, Late Archaic to Woodlands period, ca. 3000 BCE to 800 CE. A finely pecked andesite stone axe head with a with a double grooves encircling the diameter. The blade end was ideal as a chopping tool and the blunt butt could have been used like a hammer. The grooves were used for attaching the stone to a short handle with fibrous twine or leather straps. Size: 4.125" L x 1.6" W (10.5 cm x 4.1 cm)
This was part of the William and Carol Thibadeau collection, and many pieces from their collection appear in exhibitions and permanent museum collections, including the Michael C. Carlos Museum and Nasher Museum of Art.
