Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, El Salvador and Honduras, Maya Territories, Olmecoid / Proto-Maya, Pre-Classic period, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. An intriguing pottery figure of a female hunchback seated with legs crossed and hands resting on her lap, just below her bulging belly. Bare-chested, her prominent pointed breasts protrude forward from above a knee-length skirt. Her visage is comprised of bean-shaped eyes, a naturalistic nose, a pointed chin, and full lips in a partial smile, all crowned by a striated coiffure. Note the incised lines that adorn her upper body, forming mesmerizing, geometric decoration and perhaps intended to represent ceremonial scarification. The many representations of hunchbacks have led to the suggestion hunchbacks people held positions of importance in the ancient Mesoamerican world. Beginning with Olmec peoples, these individuals were thought to possess special abilities due to their physical anomalies. Size: 6.5" W x 8" H (16.5 cm x 20.3 cm)

The figurine may have been a personal possession, perhaps belonging to a ruler or one who desired to keep the supernatural powers of a hunchback close at hand.

Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Steven Frisina collection, Steven SKF Fine Art, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired February 2006
