Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Greater Nicoya or Atlantic Watershed, Period IV, ca. 300 to 500 CE. A hand-built phalliform effigy with an abstract bird figure - head, arms, and legs - near the scrotum. A lengthy slit along the top of the shaft indicates this could have been a musical instrument like a rattle. Size: 8.4" L x 3.25" W x 4" H (21.3 cm x 8.3 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Stanley L. Kaufman collection, before 1993

Repaired with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions and pitting, with softening to some finer details on bird head, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to overall form.
