Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, central coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A fascinating pottery canteen with an anthropomorphic head and a body resembling a jaguar, all surmounted by a flared spout and 2 avian-form, lug handles. The expressive visage projects forward, displaying a countenance suggestive of drug intoxication with bulging, wide eyes and a maddening grin exposing bared teeth. A pair of raised breasts are below the head flanked by anthropomorphic arms, while the body is comprised of phytomorphic knobs. Intricately painted meander, polka dot, and zigzag patterns further embellish the surface of the vessel. Jars like this one likely depict the transformational moment of a psychedelic ceremony, when the shaman would take a zoomorphic form, such as a jaguar as seen here. Size: 3.6" L x 5.1" W x 5.3" H (9.1 cm x 13 cm x 13.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, excavated or purchased in Peru in the 1960s, thence by descent to present owners
