Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A mold-formed blackware pottery vessel depicting a charming llama head with a large opening on the top. A rope halter is strapped arounf the snout and around the two perky ears. Camelids such as llamas and alpacas were used as meat for sustenance and transportation of goods, however their wool for textiles was the most important reason for domestication. Wool came from one of the four species (in order of wool quality and fineness) vicuna, guanacos, alpaca, or llama. As llamas and alpacas are domesticated from the wild vicuna and guanacos, they were more commonly used. Incan royalty reserved the right to wear vicuna which was worth nearly the same as gold! This effigy celebrates an animal that had economic, cultural, and social significance to Chimu people. Size: 7" L x 6" W x 5" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
