An antique Egyptian Grand Tour cast bronze sculpture representing a cat, circa 1880s. The cat is wearing an incised beaded collar with Eye of Horus pectoral, the ears pierced for earrings. The artwork is mounted on a stone base. In Ancient Egypt, some bronze statues of cats were created to house mummified cats and subsequently offered to the feline goddess Bastet, the goddess of the domestic sphere. The pieces like this were intended to be Grand Tour souvenirs very popular among North Europe travelers.
