"Landscape, Fruit and Flowers" by Currier & Ives, 1862. Vintage plate from the used 1950 wall calendar. The Currier & Ives plate is reproduced in original size.
The picture [lithographed area] is c.11.3/4" x 8.1/2" [30cm x 21.5cm]; the entire plate is 16" x 11" [40.6cm x 28cm]; some soiling and wear, a few edge ceases, very good condition.
Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) was an American lithographer, who headed the company "Currier & Ives" with James Ives.
At fifteen, Currier started what would become a life-long career when he apprenticed in the Boston lithography shop of William and John Pendleton. In 1835, He founded his own lithographic business as a sole proprietorship. He initially engaged in standard lithographic business of printing sheet music, letterheads, handbills, etc. However, he soon took his work in a new direction, creating pictures of current events.
In 1840, Currier began to move away from job printing and into independent print publishing. In 1850, James Ives came to work for Currier's firm as bookkeeper. Ives' skills as a businessman and marketer contributed significantly to the growth of the company; in 1857, he was made a full partner, and the company became known as "Currier & Ives".
