Provenance: from the collection of important American art collector George Arnold Hearn, (1835-1913,) descended in the family through marriage along with Mr. Hearn's hand-written log of all the 1050 paintings he acquired between 1873 and 1913. Mr. Hearn's log entry regarding this painting reads: " # 174, Feb. 10. 1893. Bought of: Ortgies and Co. Artist: Nicholas Bergheim. Cost: $110. Frame: $40. Former Owner: Sold in Detmold Sale. Presented to: Clarkson Cowl." (Clarkson Cowl (1863-1940) was married to George Hearn's daughter, Caroline Hearn Cowl, (1865-1944.)
