Oil on panel pastoral scene showing a barefoot woman milking a cow in an Italianate landscape, with a second cow, three sheep and a goat nearby, by influential Dutch Golden Age painter Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. Provenance: from the collection of important American art collector George Arnold Hearn, (1835-1913,) descended in the family through marriage along with Mr. Hearn's hand-written log of all the 1050 paintings he acquired between 1873 and 1913. Mr. Hearn's log entry regarding this painting reads: " # 174, Feb. 10. 1893. Bought of: Ortgies and Co. Artist: Nicholas Bergheim. Cost: $110. Frame: $40. Former Owner: Sold in Detmold Sale. Presented to: Clarkson Cowl." (Clarkson Cowl (1863-1940) was married to George Hearn's daughter, Caroline Hearn Cowl, (1865-1944.) Rococo frame with gold leaf, with "Nicholas Berghem (1620-1683)" in black below painting. Frame, approx. 24 1/2" x 21 1/2". Sight, approx. 13 1/2" x 10 1/4"
