Description
Milo of Croton. In the manner of Giam Bologna. 20" x 14.5" x 8.5" 42lbs. Six time Olympian well into his 40's over 540BC to 535BC. He went on to lead the Crotonian army in victory and defeated the Sybarites in 511BC wearing his Olympic wreaths and dressed like Hercules in a lion's skin and carrying a club. He had many feats of strentgth such as holding a pomegranate without damaging it while challenging other olympian competitors to take it from him. My favorite was in his off season training by carrying a new born calf. As he progressed over time to a 4 year old cow. He carried the cow the length of the stadium. At which point he proceeded to kill, roast and eat it. Amazing! Legend has it that such feats were his eventual undoing when he tried to help a villager in the countryside. Trying to split a tree trunk with hammer and wedges. Milo offered to help with his strength. As he tried to pull the stump apart with his bare hands, the wedges fell out trapping his fingers. He could not break free. Waiting for the villager to return with food, Milo met his end when a lion took advantage of his predicament and descended upon him.Based on the research and the history of the bronze, we believe this masterwork is Don in the manner of Giambologna and sussini after him.No signature was used by sculptures until mid 19 century.we provided and cross referenced the closest lion in the same mannerCan facilitate the shipping/crating/sufficient insurance
