Item Details
Description
A scarce Ronson cigarette lighter gadget cane. The crook malacca handle measures about 8 1/2" along the arc and is 1 1/4" thick. Just below the handle there is a 4" by 3/4" brass fitting that is inscribed: "Club Hemphill, New Years Eve, 1930". (The cane may have been given as a gift/award at a New Years Party, perhaps by Ronson for its top salesmen. In Dike's Cane Curiosa on page 77, 7/105, an exact example of this cane is shown. She indicates that: "Reportedly, the Ronson Company offered these canes to its best salesmen".) The brass fitting is hinged, with a small button-latch that opens to allow an attached Ronson cigarette lighter to emerge from within the shaft. The lighter is marked: "Ronson De Light" along with several patent numbers. The lighter has flint, wick, and fluid, and works with a spring-driven arm to produce a flame. The piece ends with a 1 1/4" light horn ferrule. The overall length is 35 3/4" and the condition is very good with working mechanics, and it is a very desirable example of the kind. Estimate: $3000-$4000.
