Description

1973 BMW 2002 Tii Chassis no. 2763429 • Road-legal racer • Fast and fun * Please note that this car will be available for viewing by prior appointment in Belgium. The impetus for BMW's post-war resurgence was the four-door 1500 saloon and its derivatives, and the company capitalised on the success of these models with the launch of a revised two-door range in 1966. In common with the earlier cars, the new 1600 (later 1602) featured unitary construction, all-independent suspension, front disc brakes, and came with a 1,573cc, 85bhp version of the BMW's dependable and proven, single-overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder M10 engine. Demands for increased power, not least from the firm's US importer, Max Hoffman, led to the introduction of the 2002 in 1968. BMW's director of product planning, Helmut Werner Bönsch, and Alex von Falkenhausen, the M10's designer, had already had 2-litre engines installed in their personal 1602s, and proposed to BMW that the company should build a production model along similar line. The result was the 2002. The larger, 1,990cc engine produced 100bhp at 5,500rpm in single-carburettor configuration and 120bhp on twin Webers when installed in the 2002TI. With Kugelfischer fuel injection the 2002tii's engine produced 120bhp, which was good for a top speed of around 190km/h (120mph), an outstanding performance and one that made the car the most exciting medium-sized sports saloon of its day. Most powerful of all the normally aspirated 2002 derivatives, the 2002tii is rightly regarded as a 'modern classic', is increasingly sought-after today, and is one of the cars that did most to establish BMW's enduring reputation as a sporting marque. The car is fun to drive, purposeful and quick – but, as a racer, it's built for speed, not comfort. This is an ex-cross racer from the USA equipped with 2.0 engine, dual DCOE weber 40 carburettors, performance manifold, new exhaust line, 4-speed manual transmission, restored and upgraded disc brakes all round, lowered suspension, and new ignition, cooling, and pump components. It also has new door panels, bucket seats, racing harnesses, BBS rims, turbo kit front and rear spoiler, and a new battery. It has been resprayed in its original colour. The car comes with a clean USA title and all duties and taxes fully paid. Lot to be sold without reserve.
