Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare bronze figural statue of a nude young man wearing a cap and standing with a banner over his head with a inscription, possibly for a home shrine or temple offering. The banner may represent a votive tablet known as tabula, which were often inscribed with inscriptions that were dedicatory or funerary in context. The raised letters on this banner are rubbed and faint in some areas, however the last word might be a form of morior (to die): "morii." Size: 2.5" W x 5.5" H (6.4 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired on the New York City art market, before 2010
