TAKAI TAIREI (1880-1971) A Group of Five Small Japanese Covered Wood Boxes Taisho (1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era, mid-20th century All five made of wood with varying degrees of lacquer decoration, the first with a design of hōzuki (Chinese lantern plant), the box entirely covered in lacquer, the underside of the lid signed Tairei; the second with a design of umbrellas and gohei (wand with paper streamers) inside circles, the underside of the lid sealed Tairei and the bottom of the box with a small gourd-shaped mark; the third, of mixed wood construction, two small clams on the lid, the underside of the lid sealed Tairei and the bottom of the box with a small gourd-shaped mark; the fourth, in the shape of a Daruma doll, with three round-bottomed figures of humans and animals on the kabusebuta (overhanging lid), the underside and the interior of the box lacquered black, the underside of the lid signed Tairei; the fifth, with a design of an open folding fan on the kabusebuta (overhanging lid), the fan with a motif of birds, waves, and clouds, the birds of inlay-shell, the interior of the box and underside of the lid lacquered semi-transparent brown, the underside of the lid signed Tairei; the first three with wood tomobako storage boxes. 4 x 3 1/2 x 1 3/8in (10.1 x 8.9 x 3.5cm), the largest (5).
