Description
Native American, United States, California, Channel Islands, Chumash people, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A massive pottery jar presenting a voluminous body, an attenuated neck, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a rounded base. Vessels like this were likely used as burial pots in which the Chumash would cremate the bones of the dead, seal with tar or pitch, and then place into caves. Size: 15" Diameter x 17.2" H (38.1 cm x 43.7 cm); 18.2" H (46.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Chipping to rim and stable fissures to walls. Nicks and abrasions to surface as shown, as well as areas of fire-darkening. Otherwise, intact with nice presentation.
