1865 Parole Signed for Ordnance Sergent of Forrest's Cavalry Corps
Parole signed by Elias Smith Dennis "E. S. Dennis" as Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers. 1p partially printed, measuring 7.75" x 5", Gainesville, Alabama, dated May 10, 1865. No. 1, issued to "Robert L. Bliss Ord. Sergt. of Forrest's Cavalry Corps C.S.A., residing in Florence, Alabama …by order Major General E. R. S. Canby, U.S.A." Attested to on verso by Joseph H. Duggan, assistant Chief ordnance officer, Forrest's Cavalry Corps. With flattened folds, light soiling, and wear. Boldly signed.
Forrest's Cavalry Corps was formed in 1862 and commanded by Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Early in the war, it served as part of the Army of the Tennessee but moved into the Western Theater during the second half of the war. The unit participated in such battles as Chickamauga, Fort Pillow, Memphis, Murfreesboro, Nashville, and Wilson's Raid. Elias S. Dennis (1812-1894) was a Union general who served with the 30th Illinois Infantry. He fought at key engagements such as the Battle of Fort Donelson, Port Gibson, and the Vicksburg Campaign.
