Liu Dan (China, born 1953); Porcelain Brush Pot in celadon and underglaze blue; a Portrait by Liu Dan of Andy Kay signed "Andy's funny face / 1986.2.2. Dan." with "Shou" character and "AK" in underglaze blue; the porcelain signed to the base "Ann Rathbun / Hawaii / 1986." Height 5 1/2 inches (14 cm.). PROVENANCE: A gift from Liu Dan to Andy Kay; to Estate of Andy Kay, Hawaii. NOTE: Andy had partnered for several years with the Chinese artist Liu Dan in a partnership christened ?Ulu Mau Studios? (Ulu mau: Hawaiian for ?ever growing? or ?ever green?). The partnership flourished during Dan?s post-China-early-U.S. years in Hawaii. They collaborated on several corporate commissions, most notably on Ulu Mau Studio?s commission for the premier of Patrice Montagnon?s ballet ?Happy Birthday? at the Frankfurt Opera in Germany. On that assignment they both did all the painting for the dancers? multi-colored flowing costumes and the sumptuous sets. Liu Dan was born in Nanjing, China in 1953 and studied at the Jiangsu Chinese Painting Academy, 1978?1981, Liu Dan moved with his wife to Hawaii in 1981 where he worked with Andy Kay & the Ulu Mau Studios. Mr Liu's work is in the collections of numerous Museums, Private Collections, with many books and catalogues on him and his art. In 2006 he relocated to Beijing, China where he currently lives and works.
