Description
Rare painted ceramic plaque by French Impressionist artist, Felix Bracquemond (1833 - 1914).

Circa 1875. Underglaze Barbotine technique painting of a landscape with trees on a hillside at sunrise or sunset.

Glazed terra cotta plaque mounted in the original thick round black lacquer frame with gilt liner.

Signed on the front, lower left, under the glaze, with the artists conjoined monogram. Signed on the back, hand painted: HC & Co. There is an original paper label affixed to the frame with handwriting (indistinct).

Felix Bracquemond was art director of the Auteuil workshop at Haviland from 1872-79 and in 1874 he participated in the first exhibition of impressionist painters in the workshops of the photographer Nadar, at the Boulevard des Capucines. The exhibition included Felix Braquemond, Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissaro, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley. This plaque was made by Bracquemond at the L Atelier d Auteuil Haviland in Paris about the same time period as the exhibition.

A fine and unique example of Impressionist ceramics by Felix Braquemond.

PROVENANCE: San Francisco collection.

CONDITION: The plaque is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration. The frame with wear and small losses.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Felix Braquemond (1833 - 1914) French painter, etcher, and printmaker was a French painter, etcher, printmaker and ceramics designer. He designed pottery for a number of French factories, starting in the late 1850s, in an innovative style that marks the beginning of Japonisme in France. He later painted Impressionist works on pottery in the Barbotine technique. He was a close friend of Edouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, and Henri Fantin-Latour. He married Marie Quivoron, a painter known as Marie Bracquemond, in 1869, in Paris.
