Item Details
Description
Ten letters from John Fromberger, Surgeon, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry, mostly to John Reybold, Esq. Excellent content including troop movements, sieges, Yorktown, Warwick Court House, etc. including many to do with the health of a relative of the recipient. Plus another letter dated August 1861 Newark, Del. from J.J. Platt. Along with some envelopes, mostly unrelated to the letters but a couple patriotic, and a toleware box the letters were found in marked "B. Reybold Dela. City" (Delaware City, Delaware). The best letter is from Camp on Warwick Creek, Virginia, April 14th 1862, in part: "These rebel pickets across the creek from us call themselves the 'Louisiana Tigers' they are a cunning treacherous set. We now have orders no to fire at them, but they fire on us when they can. Through the day it is necessary to stay behind trees, for they have good rifles and know how to use them. Every night and morning we can hear there revelle & tatoo drumming for roll call...And one poor fellow a picket from the 6th Maine Regt near us did get scorched. He asked them for a chew of tobacco. They tied a piece to a stone and threw it over. As he stepped out from his tree to get it they shot him."
