MUMMIFIED EGYPTIAN FOOT
Dayr al-Barsha, Middle Egypt
This remarkable artifact is the actual foot of a human Egyptian mummy, originally retrieved from a plundered tomb dating to around 2050 BCE, the period of the Old Kingdom, when the pyramids were first being built. The tomb was located in a shaft cut in the rock of a vast necropolis on the southern hill of Dayr al-Barsha, and the mummy was probably destroyed by grave-robbers in search of jewelry wrapped in the linen. The foot is of small size, and is partially wrapped in a good portion of the linen, from which the slender, blackened toes emerge, complete with nails, approximately 5 inches long overall, presented on a wood and brass display stand.
