WALRUS SKULL WITH CARVED TUSKS
Odobenus rosmarus
Pleistocene
Arctic region
Artist: Evans Apatiki
Walruses have long been revered by the indigenous peoples of the Arctic, who see in them many human attributes. Highly social and gregarious, slow to mature and reproduce, fiercely protective of their young, vocally communicative and long-lived, Walruses implicitly invite human empathy. Their bones are frequently used for ritual, functional, or purely decorative purposes, and here is a beautiful skull, with lovely creamy bone-white coloring, full dentition, and a handsome pair of 22 1/4 x 21 3/4 tusks. Delightfully carved in relief on the outer side of each is the figure of a swimming whale, signed by artist EA, 26 3/4 inches long overall.
