Description
An original lithograph print, 20.5 x 14.5 in., titled ‘Field Hospital 1st Division, 6th Corps, Near Petersburg, VA’ and captioned ‘Winter of 1864 and 5’. The image depicts a large Army hospital tent with several smaller tents behind, and in the foreground are incoming and outgoing patients. One of the men seen is on crutches due to the amputation of his right leg, a common yet unfortunate practice seen during the war to prevent gangrene. The publishing line for ‘J.H. Bufford’s Litho Boston’ is at the bottom right and at the bottom left is the name of the original sketch artist, W.A. Champney. Presented in a modern black frame, 23 x 17 in. overall. Regrettable watermarks along the margins, still very good.
