Item Details
Description
Walter Feldman (1925-2017). Painted wood sculpture. Painted on both sides with different imagery. Signed & titled "Masada SteleI" in pencil on bottom. Dimensions: 14" x 12" x 8". In 1969 – 1970, Feldman did a large series of Masada inspired prints, paintings and sculpture. An ardent explorer of new mediums, he used lacquer paint with a screen print to paint onto Japanese paper, wood sculpture boxes, masonite panels and canvas. A tricky process he had to make sure that the paint did not run and maintain crisp demarcation in his design as well as layer several patterns and colors. Sometimes purely black and white, other times with silver tones and vibrant colors. While best known for his paintings and prints, Feldman enjoyed working on sculpture and this cube Masada sculpture is a charming example of his mastery of the three-dimensional form. This Masada series was completed after he met the visiting scholar Yigael Yadin from Hebrew University at Brown University. One of Israel’s most famous and accomplished field archaeologists he clearly influenced Feldman on his views of Masada and its’ importance to Jewish History. Feldman has a personalized copy of Yadin’s archeological publication on Masada dated 1969 when Feldman started his series of print and paintings on Masada. Feldman came to Brown University in 1953 after getting an MFA from Yale and teaching there for 2 years. He won a Fulbright scholarship in 1957. His works have been included in one person and group exhibitions at major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art.
