Description
Artist: C. von Fascini (Italian, 19th century) most likely. "Feeding the Sheep". Oil on canvas. Signed 'Fremont', indistinctly. Dimensions: 10" x 14". Housed in ornate original frame: 18" x 22". This cheerful shepard has an eager flock of sheep following him into the barn for their dinner of hay. A picturesque work, the painting is signed but little is known of the artist. It is assumed to be that of an Italian artist given that it was hung paired with a barnyard scene of the exact painting style and subject matter by the identifiable 19th century Italian artist, C. von Fascini. He appears to have been an itinerant artist who concentrated on farm animal scenes and may have used pseudonyms. The detail in the painting is an excellent example of the bucolic pastoral scenes popular in the 19th century romanticizing farm life. The prestige in which the painting was held is evident by the Gold Leaf ornate frame it is housed in that is in very good condition. The painting was beloved by a private family for two generations.
