Description
This lot contains three items (etching; lithograph & steel name plate) from the estate of Antonio Cirino (1888-1983) & a Grace Albee wood engraving. Cirino etching is 4" x 5" & comes matted (10" x 12"), the litho image is 2 1/2" x 21/2" & matted to 7" x 7" & the name plate is 3" x 3". The Albee etching is "Gossipy Bretons" (1977). It is signed & dated in pencil in lower margin, with title & edition size in lower margin. The image is 6" x 4 1/2" & comes well framed under glass (14" x 12"). Cirino loved his home in Rockport, Mass, his retreat from the urban setting of Providence where he taught at RISD and painted in his East Providence Studio. It is not surprising that his Rockport paintings and images are the most collectable as connoisseurs find them the most genuine and inspired of his works. While best known for his oil painting, very early in his career Cirino joined fellow Rockport artists such as Anthony Thieme producing detailed fine line etchings in the 1920’s of Rockport. He exhibited them at the Providence Art Club exhibits but abandoned printmaking to pursue the more lucrative oil painting market. Grace Albee has been recognized as one of America’s premier woodcut engravers and printmakers. She is in over 30 museum collections and early in her career she fell in love with printmaking in Paris. In 1928, the Albee family moved to Paris, settling in for a five-year stay in the French Capital. There Grace Albee returned to the world of art, associating with American expatriate artists including Norman Rockwell and engraver Paul Bornet. She studied wood engraving under Paul Bornet at the Institute d'Esthetique Contemporaire. Her progress was rapid and success soon followed. In Paris, Albee developed a passion for depicting urban and natural environments. This work was well received, with Albee exhibiting at several Paris Salons and having a one-woman exhibition at the American Library in Paris in 1932. "Gossipy Bretons" is inspired by a visit to Breton, France in 1929 that was later carved and printed in 1977.
