Item Details
Description
Near East, Cyprus, Philia period, Early Cypriot I, ca. 2500 to 2300 BCE. A delightful pottery pitcher featuring a globular body, a tall, slender neck, and a slanted spout. A pair of tubular handles extend out from the back of the spout, first wrapping around one another and then splitting apart to end in 2 different spots on the shoulder. This piece is from the Philia culture, which existed on the island of Cyprus at the start of the Early Bronze Age between 2450 and 2200 BCE. Philia culture arose when a major catastrophe in Anatolia caused refugees to form a settlement on the isle of Cyprus, bringing with them new cultural ideas. Due to their shared Anatolian heritage, Philia pottery greatly resembles that of Yortan culture. Size: 4.1" Diameter x 6.9" H (10.4 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private Alta Dena, California, USA collection, acquired in 1973
