JAPANESE GOLD LACQUER FIVE-CASE INRO
Edo Period, Circa 1800
Finely executed continuous rockery landscape decoration with a cockerel on a drum on one side and a hen with chicks on the other, each bird with red lacquer highlights. Nashiji interior. Signed on base.
Height 3.5". Width 2". Depth 1".
Notes:
The design on this inro is based on an illustration in "Ehon Shahobukuro" by Tachibana Morikuni, published in 1720, according to the consignor's notes, which were provided to him by Heinz and Else Kress.
