Description
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain. Published 1867 by C.H. Webb. First edition. First state. Meets all first state error points, including a lack of type break on last page. One of the first 1000 printed which started Mark Twain on his writing career. Ad page opposite title page is no longer present. Copies were bound simultaneously in green, terra cotta, dark brown, lavender, blue deep purple, maroon, and red cloth (MacDonnell, "The Primary First Editions of Mark Twain", Firsts, Vol. 8, no. 7/8). This copy features the gilt stamp of the leaping frog positioned to the lower left of the front cover as usual. Bound in the blue colored boards. Yellow leaf at front not present. 12mo. 198pp.
Condition
Wear to boards with scuffing and loss of cloth. Cloth slightly peeling on spine. Some staining on boards. Some cracking at hinges. Light foxing. Missing yellow colored leaf before title page. Pencil marks may be present from a previous owner. h. 7", w. 4.75", d..75"
