Description
An experimental mixed media drawing of a stooped old man with a walking stick, by James Houston. Initialled CJGM (Colin Molson) with a red star on the bottom likely indicating his purchase. A small tear on the left side under the mat. Unsigned, circa 1958. All the Inuit art and sculpture in this auction is from the Colin and Winnifred Molson Foundation, collected primarily in the 1950s and early 1960s. Colin Molson was, for many years from the 1930s into the 1960s, president and chairman of The Canadian Guild of Crafts. Starting in the late 1940s he worked with Jim Houston to bring the art and sculpture of the Inuit to southern markets in a way that maximized the return to the artist and helped them develop viable community enterprises. Unframed: Sight: 10.25" x 7.25". Mat: 17.25" x 13.25". Colin and Winnifred Molson Foundation.
