Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

Ancient Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A fine bronze weight of square form inscribed with the Greek letters gamma and beta - the denominational mark for 2 ounces (though this example weighs 1.79 ounces) - and light remains of a cross above. Standard weights and measures were implemented by Rome to endure consistency and to prevent corruption, especially amongst tax collectors and merchants. The Byzantine empire maintained this practice by creating these weights with the addition of Christian symbols. Size: 1.2" L x 0.25" W x 1.2" H (3 cm x 0.6 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
