Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
Near East / Islamic world, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A pretty example of an unglazed ceramic storage jar. The shape is piriform, with a diminutive round foot, a tiered upper body, and a register of vine-like motifs around the upper shoulder. The neck flares out, acting as a protective collar around a projecting spout; narrow incisions around the neck may have allowed extra liquid to run down the sides as it evaporated. The register of motifs is divided by raised lines, giving the viewer the impression of looking out a window onto a dense garden. Vessels like these were used to store liquids and keep them cool using the evaporation that their porous walls allowed. Size: 4.75" W x 5.95" H (12.1 cm x 15.1 cm)
Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired before 2003; ex-old French collection, Paris, France, acquired 1977 to 1987
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
