This young Confederate private wears a dark-colored slouch hat with its brim folded and butternut jacket. Notably, his uniform features a “Confederate States of America” CSA buckle, one of the most sought-after accoutrements in southern Civil War photography. These letters are mostly visible to the naked eye despite the artist’s addition of gold gilt to the area.

The soldier is otherwise double-armed, with a musket in his hand and revolver stuck in his belt.
