Thomas Henry Dyer (1804-1888). Nine photographs (albumen prints) from "The Ruins of Pompeii a Series of Eighteen Photographic Views" which was published in London: Bell and Daldy, 1867. A lovely ensemble of nine historic photographs depicting various views of the ruins of Pompeii by Thomas Henry Dyer. Dyer published a study of Pompeii in 1867 which included a comprehensive history of the ancient city of Pompeii with an account of its destruction. An English antiquarian writer, Dyer published "The History of Modern Europe"; "History of the City of Rome" and "History of the Kings of Rome" in addition to "The Ruins of Pompeii". Size (images): ~6.25" L x 4.75" W (15.9 cm x 12.1 cm) Size (sheets): 10.625" L x 8.5" W (27 cm x 21.6 cm) - Lot includes photos of both portrait and landscape formats.
Images include: Fresco of Bacchus and Ariadne; House of Lucretius; Recent Excavations (2); Mills and Ovens; The Basilica; Street of the Tombs; Mosaic Fountain; and The Triangular Forum.
Each photograph is accompanied by a COA signed by Jerome M. Eisenberg confirming that it is an original albumen print from Thomas H. Dyer's "The Ruins of Pompeii: A Series of Eighteen Photographic Views" published in 1867 by Bell and Daldy, London.
One of the photographs of "Recent Excavations" has the following inscription handwritten in ink on the verso, "From W.B. Wasbrough to his dear Father and Mother. December 10th 1872."

Photos are float mounted on paper. Handwritten notes in the margins identify sites/artworks as well as the photographer Thomas Dyer and the year 1867. Papers present with toning, stains (most in margins and verso), and matte burn as shown. Each photograph is accompanied by a COA signed by Jerome M.
