Description

Charles Wesley 1755 "Epistle to the Reverend Mr. John Wesley"

An honorary poem published by Charles Wesley about his brother, John Wesley. 16pp, measuring 4" x 6.5", London, dated 1755. Printed for J. Robinson. Entitled "An Epistle to the Reverend Mr. John Wesley, by Charles Wesley." Seemingly removed from a larger volume. Light toning, foxing, and soiling throughout. Rough edges and some creasing. Some tears or cuts to the center of the first few pages. Overall good.

An excerpt from the epistle reads as follows:
"My first and last unalienable Friend,
A Brother's Thoughts with due Regard attend,
A Brother, still as thy own Soul belov'd,
Who speak to learn, and write to be reprov'd:
Far from the factious undiscerning Crowd,
Distrest I fly to Thee, and think aloud;
I tell Thee, wife and faithful as Thou art,
The Fears and Sorrows of a burthen'd Heart,…"

John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist who led a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. Although Wesley was barred from preaching in many parish churches during the early part of his ministry, he later became widely respected, and by the end of his life, was described as "the best-loved man in England."

Charles Wesley (1707-1788) was the younger brother of John Wesley and a prolific hymn writer who wrote over 6,500 hymns during his lifetime. His works include "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today", the carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", and "Lo! He Comes With Clouds Descending". Despite their closeness, Charles and John did not always see eye to eye on matters of religion: In particular, Charles was strongly opposed to the idea of a breach with the Church of England as a result of their Methodism.
