Three Ca. 1789-91 John Wesley Silver Metal Commemorative Coins, Rare
A group of three silver-colored metal commemorative coins celebrating the life of Methodist preacher John Wesley. All measure 1.375" in diameter, n.p., and only one is dated 1789. The other two are memorial coins and were produced sometime after Wesley's death in 1791. Two of the three coins are housed in plastic cases, measuring 2" x 2". Each coin has varying degrees of rubbing, scratching, wear, and oxidation. They were likely silver-plated over white base metal. Some of the text has become worn. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information. Very good overall.
The obverse of all depict a side profile portrait of Wesley with the text "The Revd. John Wesley A.M." The reverse is different for each, with one showing a figure crying over a mausoleum, the 1789-date one showing Wesley preaching to a gathered crowd beneath a large tree, and one of a coffin draped with funeral banners and an open bible laying across the top - the text reads " His work shall follow him."
John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist who led a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. Although Wesley was barred from preaching in many parish churches during the early part of his ministry, he later became widely respected, and by the end of his life, was described as "the best-loved man in England."
