Anti-McClellan Broadside Ft. Alexander Stephens' Secession Speech

A Civil War era broadside featuring a printed speech made by Alexander Stephens given during the Georgia Secession Convention. Measuring 10.25" x 17.5" (sight), N.p., [1864]. A printed version of Stephen's speech, given before the Georgia Secession Convention in 1860, and now used in opposition to Democratic presidential candidate George McClellan four years later. The speech is used in this context to criticize the Copperhead movement and McClellan's policies. The broadside has been matted and framed to the overall size of 15.75" x 23". With flattened folds and light age toning. Very fine overall.

The broadside in part:

"There are many well-meaning men in the party called 'DEMOCRATS,' who, through party spirit, have allowed themselves to seem to be committed in favor of the 'Peace-and-Secession' Doctrine of the men whom they have permitted to become their leaders. To such men we recommend a careful perusal of the following extract from a speech made by ALEXANDER STEPHENS…called to consider the propriety of Secession. He showed clearly that the South had no just cause of complaint, and predicted what would be the consequences of the terrible act. Mr. STEPHENS has since yielded to the spirit of party, against which he so long struggled, but his defection does not disprove his own arguments, the truth of which every day is demonstrated by the painful logic of fact…"

Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883) was an American politician who served as the Vice President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865, and later as the 50th Governor of Georgia from 1882 until his death. Stephens was a strong supporter of slavery and controversially tabled the Clayton Compromise, which would have banned slavery from the Oregon Territory.
